Conversation with a Sound Healer

Recently, I had the privilege of chatting with the beautiful Amanda Mackay, a Sound Healer based in Aspley, Brisbane. Amanda has a calm, friendly and welcoming energy and offers a peaceful space to relax and heal. The following conversation with Amanda was posted with the intention to provide understanding and insight into Sound Healing as a gentle, but powerful healing modality.

What is Sound Healing?

Sound healing is a modality that assists you to balance emotions that cause resistance to you creating the life that you would like.

For example, if you know someone who always attracts relationships that are unhealthy, where they are not treated well, this can sometimes manifest from a place where they didn’t receive the attention they needed from a parent when they were young, so they’re constantly searching for somebody to love them. Because they haven’t been taught what a healthy, loving relationship can be, their boundaries are sometimes not as robust as they could be, so they seek that attention in anybody, rather than a partner who is caring, loving and respectful. So sound healing can help you to remove old patterns of behaviour that are not serving you.

How will Sound Healing benefit me?

Sound healing will help you to create the life you want.

We all have belief systems that we have inherited, some of which we are not even conscious of. These inherited belief systems can originate from many generations back. For example, sometimes you will see people who win the lotto lose all the money within a couple of years because they have the mindset or belief system that other people have money; that we don’t have money; that our family doesn’t have money; that money is hard to get; or that money is hard to come by. Due to that underlying unconscious belief system they can actually lose the money. If they didn’t have that belief system, they could create so many things with the money that they have been gifted. Sound healing assists in eliminating stale and unconscious belief systems that cause limitations in your life.

How do I actually heal through Sound Healing?

All emotion is a vibration and those vibrations of experience stay with us.

It’s like muscle memory. We have emotion memory. For example, if you’ve been hurt by somebody in the past, in say a relationship, you’re going to be wary the next time. With sound healing, it’s the vibration of the instrument, whether it’s a tuning fork, a drum, a Tibetan bell, or a singing bowl, that creates vibration which meets that dissonance in the emotion that you’re storing. It’s like pouring water over a sugar cube. It will just melt it and dissipate that emotion to bring it back to your own soul tone which is where you’ll get to create your own life from.

What is a typical session like?

When you come to a sound healing session, first we will talk about why you’re here, what it is you want to create out of the session, what might be the things that are causing resistance and frustration in your life and then we see which energy centres or chakras need to be worked on in relation to that.

For example, you might be feeling stuck in your life, or feeling like you don’t know how to move forward and you can’t quite make a decision on what you’re going to do. In that case, we would do a healing around the feet, as the feet represent being stuck, or mired in a particular situation. Then we work through the biofield, or you might know that as an aura. Our biofield is like our timeline. A distance of about five feet away from the body represents our birth and as we move closer in to the body, it represents more recent events and now. We will come across all these emotions as we work our way closer towards the body and then once all of those energies have been balanced for that particular session, we finish up by talking about what you have felt through the session. You can talk through the session if you choose. Some people like to talk through the session whereas, others prefer to just lie and experience whatever is going on. That part is completely up to you. We end the session by discussing your experience and how you might like to move forward with healing.

How long does a session usually last for?

A sound healing session is generally 1 hour, to 1 hour and a half, depending on what we need to do.

Is Sound Healing a continuous process, or is it a one off session?

All healing is an ongoing process.

When you’re in a session we’re working on a particular layer of that emotion or situation. It may come up again later on. I’ve had people come to sessions and we’ve worked on a particular experience that they thought they had healed years ago. It might be something subtle that resurfaces later on, which just gives you a good opportunity to clear everything on a really deep level. It’s like going to the gym. You can’t just go once and then you’re an athlete, you have to continue with the sound healing process if you want to achieve a particular outcome.

What is the time frame between each session?

I have found through my experience that the most effective time frame between sessions is one week. Any less than that is really too much as you need time to integrate the healing. If you leave it too long between sessions, you’re not getting as optimal an outcome. Again it’s like going to the gym or learning something new, you need to be consistent. I like working with people for six consecutive sessions. Clients seem to get a really profound experience from having that number of sessions.

Do I need to bring anything to a session?

The only thing you need to bring to a session is a willingness to heal.

What sort of instruments or equipment are used during the session?

Within sound healing, I use a hand held drum, tuning forks, Tibetan bell, singing bowls, we even use little chimes as well.

What can I expect in the days or weeks after a Sound Healing session?

This varies from person to person. Some people feel really energized and they’re very excited about the next steps that they’re going to take. Some people can feel a little tired, like they need a really big sleep because they’re integrating some really deep healing. Some people may feel a little unwell. What I’ve done to assist clients through this process is set up sound healing recordings on soundcloud, which they can access at any time. So if it’s late at night or early in the morning, or a time when they can’t give me a call, they can easily listen to these sound healings. I have had feedback from clients that it has helped them get back to sleep and to clear headaches and body pain.
